STILL LIFE

Most of the still life paintings are inspired by objects and tasks around the kitchen. Food and drink are basic pleasures in life and as such deserve to be elevated to the status of a painting.

Scotch Broth and Beetroot Soup Peter Piper
SCOTCH BROTH AND BEETROOT SOUP PETER PIPER

“SCOTCH BROTH AND BEETROOT SOUP” Is an abstract painting developed from the mundane of objects used in the making of soup. Although there are no signs or symbols for the viewer to read and the painting will most likely be read as an abstract I will give you an insight into the thought process I went through as I made it.     “PETER PIPER” Is inspired by the colours and shapes of Mediterranean vegetables and the joy and freshness this conjures. One of the joys of cooking with these vegetables are the colours and shapes. I absolutely love roasted peppers in olive oil, simple yet scrummy. The title for the piece developed from this and a childhood tongue twister,  “Peter Piper picked a peck o pickled peppers, if Peter Piper picked a peck of pickledpeppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”

Soup is a staple and comforting food that I often make. Humanity could be seen as a great big melting pot. (We’re aw Jock Tamsins’ Bairns)(Experimental Work) Much is said of immigration and integration, some good some bad, but I love the diversity immigration brings to society. At the time of painting this piece there was an influx of Eastern Europeans to Scotland due to the open border policy. My own background is half Lithuanian and half Scottish, my Lithuanian grandparents arriving in Scotland in 1911. This was the inspiration for the title “SCOTCH BROTH AND BEETROOT SOUP”. Scotch Broth being a staple of Scotland and Beetroot Soup, Borsht a memory of my grandmother.

I do and this is an image created from the simple shapes and coloursof hats. The image is painted onto collaged dress patterns.
